UNIDEMI Members Present BioAgroFloRes Project Results at Closing Event in Aveiro

04.03.2025

On February 28, from 9:15 AM to 1:00 PM, the University of Aveiro hosted the final event to present the results and perspectives of the BioAgroFloRes project – a Sustainable Model for Managing the Agroforestry Residual Biomass Supply Chain, Supported by a Web Platform.

Funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology  through the PCIF/GVB/0083/2019 program, the project represented a total investment of €246,889.20. It was led by the University of Aveiro in consortium with the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo and UNIDEMI through NOVA ID FCT – the Association for Innovation and Development of FCT.

During the event, researchers presented key results from the five tasks developed over the four-year project, including:

  • The creation of a Portuguese repository for agroforestry residual biomass
  • The development of sustainable business models for biomass valorization
  • The design of networks and planning tools for the supply chain
  • The development of an intelligent web platform (W@BioAgroFloRes)

UNIDEMI specifically presented the results of Task 2, which focused on a roadmap for biomass valorization until 2030 and the mapping of supply chains.

One of the project’s highlights was the creation of a functional prototype of the web platform, designed to bridge the gap between supply and demand for agroforestry residual biomass. It also includes a decision-support system that integrates simulation models and optimization algorithms for configuring and planning the logistics network.

The final roundtable featured representatives from various sectors, including farmers’ associations, biomass plants, municipalities, and collaborative laboratories. They discussed opportunities, challenges, and future perspectives for biomass valorization and reducing the risk of forest fires in Portugal.
