José Xavier Represents UNIDEMI at the “Images, Mechanics and Materials” Colloquium

06.02.2026

The main objective of the event was to present a comprehensive state of the art on advances in the use of imaging techniques in mechanics, from the material scale to the structural scale.

Within the framework of the National Colloquium “Images, Mechanics and Materials,” held from January 19 to 23, 2026, Professor José Xavier, researcher at UNIDEMI, participated as an invited speaker.

The main objective of the event was to present a comprehensive state of the art on advances in the use of imaging techniques in mechanics, from the material scale to the structural scale. With a strong focus on practical and industrial applications, the event highlighted recent developments illustrating the potential of photomechanics under real engineering conditions.

The presentation of this researcher, entitled “Mechanical characterization of wood and wood-based products using imaging methods: stiffness and failure,” focused on the development and application of advanced methodologies based on imaging techniques for the mechanical characterization of wood and derived products. In particular, approaches combining deflectometry with the Virtual Fields Method (VFM), as well as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for the identification of cohesive laws in fracture mechanics, were addressed.

José Xavier’s participation in this colloquium strengthens the international visibility of the research carried out at UNIDEMI, highlighting the national scientific contribution in the fields of experimental mechanics, bio-based materials, and photomechanics.
