On December 19, the public PhD defense in Mechanical Engineering of Paulo Grossi Dornelas took place at NOVA FCT.

The candidate presented his thesis entitled “Micro Gas Metal Arc (μ-GMA) Directed Energy Deposition: A Novel Reduced-scale GMA Approach for Thin Wall Printing”, developed under the supervision of Prof. Telmo G. Santos and the co-supervision of Prof. João de Sousa Oliveira. The work proposes an innovative approach in the field of directed energy deposition, based on a reduced-scale version of the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) process, with specific application to thin-wall printing, contributing to the advancement of metal additive manufacturing technologies.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Virgílio Cruz Machado and comprised the following members:

  • Dr. Sónia Santos Simões, Associate Professor with Habilitation, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto;
  • Dr. Luís Granadeiro Rosado, Assistant Professor, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon;
  • Dr. Telmo G. Santos, Full Professor, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon;
  • Dr. Virgílio Cruz Machado, Full Professor, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon;
  • Dr. Valdemar Rebelo Duarte, Invited Assistant Professor, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon.

The session was successfully concluded, highlighting the scientific and technological relevance of the work presented, as well as its potential impact on the development of advanced additive manufacturing processes.

UNIDEMI congratulates Dr. Paulo Grossi Dornelas on the successful completion of his PhD defense and wishes him every success in the continuation of his professional career.
