Today, the PhD defense of Rui Dias Ferreira in Industrial Engineering and Management took place at 10 a.m. in the Ceremony Hall of Building IV at NOVA FCT.

His presentation, entitled “An Industry-Wide Maturity Model for Responsible Artificial Intelligence”, proposes a maturity model applicable across the industrial sector to support the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence systems—a topic of growing relevance given technological advancements and the associated ethical challenges.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Virgílio Cruz Machado, Full Professor at NOVA FCT, and included the following members:

  1. Dr. Emad Yaghmaei, Research Fellow at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands (Opponent);
  2. Dr. João Oliveira Matias, Full Professor at the University of Aveiro (Opponent);
  3. Dr. Anabela Pereira Tereso, Associate Professor with Habilitation at the University of Minho;
  4. Dr. Maria Helena Monteiro, Assistant Professor at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lisbon;
  5. Dr. António Bárbara Grilo, Full Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon (Supervisor);
  6. Dr. Virgílio Cruz Machado, Full Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon;
  7. Dr. Aneesh Zutshi, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon.

The session included a detailed presentation of the work by the candidate, followed by the interventions of the opponents, who highlighted the relevance and timeliness of the research in the context of the digital transition and the need for responsible practices in the development and use of Artificial Intelligence.
