José Xavier Co-Coordinates International Advanced Course in Experimental and Computational Mechanics at CISM, Italy

15.10.2025

José Xavier, a researcher at UNIDEMI, recently co-coordinated, in partnership with Julien Réthoré (CNRS, Nantes, France), the advanced course “Image-Based Mechanics: An Overview of Experimental and Numerical Approaches.”

The course took place from October 6 to 10, 2025, at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine, Italy.

It brought together internationally renowned experts in the fields of experimental and computational mechanics, including Benoît Blaysat (Université Clermont Auvergne, France), Nele Famaey (KU Leuven, Belgium), Jean-Charles Passieux (INSA Toulouse, France), Claudia Redenbach (RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Germany), and Julien Réthoré (CNRS, France). The event served as a unique platform for knowledge exchange and scientific collaboration, strengthening the link between experimental research and advanced computational methods.

During the course, José Xavier delivered six comprehensive lectures, covering cutting-edge topics in experimental mechanics:

  • 2D and Stereo Digital Image Correlation – Orientation and Practical Concepts
  • Virtual Fields Method – Extraction of Material Parameters from Heterogeneous Fields
  • Image-Based Approaches in Fracture Mechanics – Case Studies: Composites, Wood, and Bone
  • High-Strain-Rate Testing – Composites and Wood Materials
  • Image-Based Material Testing – Design and Implementation
  • Practical Work with Jupyter Notebooks – Virtual Fields Method for Material Identification (with Python-based workshops)

The interactive practical sessions, conducted using Jupyter Notebooks, provided participants with hands-on experience in the implementation of advanced measurement and material characterization techniques.
