Sustainable, high-quality urban mobility plans as resilient systems (SQUARES)

Starting Date: FEB2025

Number of Partners: 2

Total Budget: 50K€

SQUARES is focused on Sustainable Urban Mobility Quality Assessment. This project promotes the development of a maturity model that evaluates the quality of sustainable urban mobility plans.

Sustainable urban mobility is a priority for the European Union. However, the complexity of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) has hindered their uniform adoption. The heterogeneity in the implementation of these plans compromises the comparison between SUMPs and the monitoring of their effectiveness at the European level. The SQUARES project emerges to address this need by structuring a model for assessing the quality and maturity of SUMPs.

The main objectives of the project are:

  • Establishing the current state of SUMPs, identifying trends, challenges, and best practices;
  • Understanding existing methodologies for measuring the quality of these plans, including the use of indicators, evaluation scales, and review processes;
  • Identifying and gathering currently missing information, essential for a more comprehensive and accurate assessment;
  • Aligning SUMP requirements with the needs of cities and urban hubs;
  • Designing a Maturity Model that enables quality assessment, allowing the identification of the level of maturity and development of SUMPs and their comparison in different urban contexts.
  • Developing a systems dynamic model that represents the complexity of SUMP and supports decision-making towards the achievement of the desired level of quality and maturity.
