UNIDEMI was created in 2003 as a research unit of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
Our ultimate goal is to produce research with high impact in the global scientific community, in the industry, services and society on the scientific domains of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Management & Entrepreneurship.
UNIDEMI has experienced a fast and successful growth in the last 15 years, today having 44 integrated research members, 10 laboratories in a total space of 1920m2, and supporting 2 PhD Programs.
UNIDEMI was evaluated by the Portuguese governmental agency for science and technology – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia – and achieved the EXCELLENT score, the highest score in the scientific domain of mechanical and industrial engineering.
Focusing on the development of core competences on Future Sustainable Digital Factories and Services. Specific research includes industrial systems design, quality engineering, ergonomics, occupational safety and security, program and project management, risk management, lean management and six sigma, green and circular economy, resilient organizations, innovation, digital transformation and entrepreneurship.
Focusing on the development of core competences on Advanced Manufacturing Processes. Specific research includes laser welding, friction stir processing, additive manufacturing, composites machining, and non-destructive testing.
Focusing on the development of core competences on Fluids and Structures. Specific research topics include structural analysis and design for the improvement of additive manufacturing technologies, seeking optimized and flexible solutions in the manufacture of parts and components.
UNIDEMI is currently involved in 2 Doctoral programs: Industrial Engineering (PDEI), and Mechanical Engineering (PDEM). Since 2008 the PDEI and PDEM 51 PhD students have been awarded the doctoral degree.
UNIDEMI is integrated in DEMI premises, and includes 10 main specialized laboratories, with equipment that supports research of the scientific areas: Quality Engineering Laboratory, Metrology Laboratory, Ergonomics Laboratory, Laboratory of Machines, Information and Advanced, Decision Making Multipurpose Laboratory, Laboratory of Structural Mechanics, Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory, Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamic and Fluid Mechanics, Laboratory for Integrated Development of Products and Processes.
The laboratories designed and equipped education and experimental research work and occupy a total of 1.920 square meters.
UNIDEMI has 44 integrated researchers and 20 collaborators. In the last evaluation process UNIDEMI got a VERY GOOD evaluation from the FCT review panel.
