BOREAS- High altitude wind energy employing a hybrid lighter-than-air platform with aerodynamic lift from the Magnus effect

The main objective of BOREAS project is to develop a new concept of devices to produce energy using the lift force developed by means of Magnus effect in inflatable cylinders. The cyclinders pull a cable connected to a ground station that, in turn powers a generator. The devices will have a twofold cycle: upwards (work phase (very high force – low speed) and Downwards – rewinding phase (very low force – high speed).

 

Partners: OMNIDEA, UNIDEMI, ESA Funding organization: QREN Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional (QREN), Sistema de Incentivos à Investigação e Desenvolvimento (SI I&DT), European Space Agency (ESA) and EU-FP7.

 

Main achievements: Considerable knowledge was acquired considering pressurised structures, Computer Modelling of these devices, Structures multifunction cables.
